Does anyone know where I can get a guidebook of local farmers that have produce - such as at a roadside stand? I've been looking but I can't find one for the Michigan area.

Great show Neal! I'm glad your bad experience was followed immediately by a great one. If you serve me food, I'm going to eat it. (My kids are another story - just trying to get them out of the routine is tough).

I shop at a Saturday market in my town. Most of the goods have been trucked over the mountains from eastern Washington. The dry-siders can grow a lot of things us coasties can't, so it saves me a trip. I have my favorites who know what they are selling, and there are the ones that I won't go back to (the ones that are selling something from a box).

Ooo - got to try "French Breakfast" melon this year. If only melons would grow on this side - my melon experiment failed this year. If that farmer has any more, I'm going to get another tomorrow - SO juicy, wonderful flavor! Goes great with blueberries.

And carrots in multiple colors with flavor. And corn that was picked the day before. (My father says the water should be boiling before you pick the corn.)

My point is that while some of these farmers may not be selling their own product, the discriminating consumer learns and acts on that knowledge. I bring home such great, fresh food and it inspires me to cook.
