Gastrocast #102Another week, another show. This week we talk soil, I rant about Raw Milk and we cook Tangerine Beef.

  1. UPDATE: Dear oh dear, now it seems that authorities want to pasteurize true French Camembert.
  2. Update: The Dog Food deaths have been attributed to Rat Poison. Is this some hideous industrial screw up or some sort of systematic attack on pets launched by psychos?

i love listening to your show, but i think your pro-raw milk episode is very biased, and blinded by your views. cow’s milk is for cows. there are benefits to drinking cow juice, but these are outweighed when consumed by those who are infirm, young children, or vulerable adults.

there is no biological need for humans to drink cow’s milk, when with a good diet, we can gain the same vitimins and minerals from plants/animals.

plus, human milk is for babies. this cannot be stessed enough and often gets forgotten in the organic/non-organic debate here in the UK. the WHO recommends that babies are breastfed until *at least* the age of two. However, many people are uncomfortable with this concept and use cow’s milk as an inefficient replacement. For these mother’s, it’s worth explaining that Raw Cow’s Milk is totally inappropiate, pasteruised milk is essential, and organic pasturised cow’s milk is best (from minimum age of 1 year).

continue with the great gastrocast,

Thanks a million for your comments. I’m glad you like the show and it spurred you to write.

I know some kids who were breast-fed until they were six! Bit awkward for all concerned when a kid pulls away from a football game to go to Mom for a drink in the stands. . . .

I will freely admit (and think I said so on the show) that we stopped using Raw Cow Milk when our 5 girls were infants. On reflection I don’t think this was necessary. Just like I was speaking of with the cow–a mother,s (a human mother’s) milk is full of antibodies, enzymes and protection of a baby. A mother who drinks raw cows milk should be passing on her immunity of it to her children through breast feeding. Don’t know why this wouldn’t be true.

Sensibly produced Raw Milk is probably more safe than commercially processed pasteurized milk, organic or not. But understandably it is up to each person’s level of sense and risk taking. If one is confident in their source of Raw Milk than there shouldn’t be a problem. Remember people have been drinking raw animal milks for centuries. However, for those who are worried or squeamish about drinking Raw Milk no problem (although they probably also aren’t going to be among those who breast feed until two or older either) there is Pasteurized Milk, hopefully from a local dairy–the kind they can play Hyacinth about and request their daily pints come from those cows. . . .

Like I (hope I) said I’m not trying to convert anyone to drinking Raw Milk per se. But I would hope people remain open minded so that people can continue to choose whether they drink Raw Milk or not in to the future.

my take on the pro-raw-milk rant was that i really didn’t care too much about the issue at all. i don’t get emotional about milk one way or another; it’s good in my muesli in the morning, a dash in my tea from time to time during the day and occasionally when i’m cooking.

what really pisses me off, though, is that the u.s. government and the european union are involved in this war of control in this issue. that’s the prime issue here.

properly and accurately packaged there should be no question that people should be allowed to choose to drink or use this milk if they choose.

you stand a pretty good chance of getting sick if you eat raw or undercooked poultry. same with pork and to a lesser extent most beef. yet we aren’t forced to buy par-boiled chicken or half poached pork chops.

the fact is — and the point is — if i want to gnaw on a raw turkey leg it’s my business, not that of any government. same goes with a glass full of raw milk, which is very likely to be fully safe.

the question is not really about milk at all. rather it’s how do we get these bureaucats to take their boots off our necks and let us live our lives as we choose?
