I’ve been dragging around this morning, even though it is a beautiful day. Seems when I logged on today my "in box" was bombarded by a heavier than usual information overload to process. I mindlessly check my gmail before checking all the feeds in the news reader. Didn’t even register. Now that the story about Gmail has been broken ( and here. ) there isn’t much more that I can say, but cool. It’s always great to get something for nothing.
Podcasting seems to be taking it’s fair share of buffets. Interesting for a thing which most people don’t even know exists. An article in the New Scientist by Christine Rosen about Egocasting takes the modern way of life to task in that it is turning us all into robots of some sort. The fact that ipods, tivo, blogs, RSS, etc are all geared towards providing us with individual content is seen as somehow evil. Not so. We’ve been ego-centric for longer than technology has existed. Yet in this supposed egocentric world blogging, podcasting and the internet in general have brought the world closer together. This is an age of reaching out, albeit selectively. And here, I think, is the crux of the issue: those who support the idea of Jung’s collective conscious, the greater good for the masses, and other Utilitarian views whereby the group decides what is best for the individual cannot stand the idea that individuals can make choices for themselves. Look at the Social Security debate going on in the US Government at the moment. It’s big brother and everything we hate to love and love to hate.
So put your two fingers in the air and grab your ipod, skip commercials with your tivo and be the indiviudual technology has meant you to be!
